Witches and potions
It all began in January when C and H started making a "Rotten Witches Soup" to get rid of the witches that come to the preschool.
First they began with any water they could find and dirt. Then they moved on to spray bottles with colored water in them and ice chunks they could find. One day they started making sand witch soup in the sand box with the mysterious balls that flew into the sandbox from the air. The other children would help participate bringing items into the soup and helping mix it up.
January 17th: H said, "I'm popping bubbles. I'm dynamiting them. This one can double speed like this! Look, it's coming out on the side over there and getting that snow blue."
C replies, "Mine is super speed too. It's going way over there. Look how colorful the water is."

Next came out the bubbles and "C" started blowing bubbles into the soup. It became very sudsy. The following day we had a science experiment with ice, food coloring and salt. In went the ice, the salt and the food coloring when they were done with their experiment.
This was our science experiment- We had ice, and they could put on food coloring and salt... and see what happens. Mostly, it was smashing up the ice and putting it in the soup!!
On February 5th I set up a potion making table inside for the children to make potions to use outside. They all worked so hard making their own potions!
The next class each of the children dumped their potions into the soup- or where ever they decided. On Feb 9th it froze over night and the children were excited to find a lot of ice. Instead of putting into the soup- they put it into two pails mixed with sand....
Some of the kiddos from the Tuesday group have been noticing the big bucket (aka rotten witches soup) evolving. I told them what the other class was doing with it. They never seem to add to the soup or really engage much in it..... however, on February 1st, V brought in some elastics that we could use in the witches soup. We talked about the environment and the animals that perhaps dumping elastics into the soup which may end up in the yard and in animal's mouths, it may not be a very good idea. So we thought about it for awhile and at the end of the day V didn't have any ideas. So, I decided to set up the potion table for their class too! It was a huge success. We have yet to use our potions as we had a special guest on the last day of preschool, so perhaps next week we can put them to use.
