No Peeking
I learned this activity while at an Unplug and Play event evening at the Rotary Centre with Dr. Beverlie Dietze.
I hung the bags up on the fence before the children arrived and as the children arrived they questioned what was in the bags. I let them know that once all the children arrived we would have a look.
When they continued to ask I would say, I wonder what’s inside. What do you think….
Then once all the children arrived I had them sit down and then I explained what we were going to do: first you will each guess what you think will be in the bag without touching and then you will get a bag, then you will feel it and shake it or smell it- but no peeking. I will then document your prediction or guess of what may be in the bag. After that you can peek.
While the bags were still on the fence, I asked them what they thought was inside:
Tuesday Morning Class:
V- toy unicorns
CS- monster truck
L- little toy babies
K- race car
CL- candy
CS- small stuffy hot tub
Z- toy unicorn
Then I gave them each a bag and each one of them felt, shook, smelled and made a prediction/guess what was inside:
V- wheat (ornamental grass that looks like wheat)
CS- monster truck
L- baby (cork on string)
K- ball (pine cones)
CL- candy
CS- stick (pine needles on a branch)
Z- pony (popsicle sticks)
Once they peeked, it seemed as though they were quite astonished to find out what was actually in the bags!
When we went inside I asked the children if they wanted to bring their bags home to do the activity with their families. They said yes. So, we decided to write out the steps (in the children’s own words) and they could copy the words on a piece of paper and then give it to their parents. All the children wrote what they needed for instructions (some just scribbled). I wrote them out on the back.
Tuesday Afternoon Class:
While the bags were still on the fence, I asked them what they thought was inside:
M- a princess
RE- a doll
B- an Ariel doll
DY- batman
H- princess Ariel
R- t-rex
I- recycling truck
D- transformer
Then I gave them each a bag and each one of them felt, shook, smelled and made a prediction/guess what was inside:
M- snow (pine cone)
RE- tree (pinecone)
B- Ariel doll (willow branch with no leaves)
DY- stick (round wooden disk)
H- Ariel doll (wooden letter)
R- whoopy cushion that's flat (it was actually damp leaves!)
I- new gloves (rock)
D- bread (bark)
