It must be science!

One of the children asked me to open the sand box. I explained to them that the ice was preventing the tarp from moving that I would only move it a little bit.
I started to pull the tarp back; it wouldn’t budge, so I decided to try to pull off the ice. It was coming off in large chunks. I set the chunks out for the children. Some grabbed shovels and started chiseling at the ice.
I noticed a lot of squinting when the ice was flying up into their faces so I quickly grabbed the goggles to help protect their eyes.
Some decided to eat the ice.

While the children were chiseling, I exclaimed that I had an idea that the children could use while exploring the ice. I grabbed the spray bottles with colored water in them.
Across the yard M and D were quite busy trying to balance on the teeter totter while standing up.

A few of the children decided to try using one spray bottle in each hand.
C was trying to manipulate one of the nozzles and sprayed her face. She exclaimed, “I sprayed mine on myself!” “H you have some on your face!”
I took a picture of H’s face and showed him. He giggled. I explained to him that because the spray bottles force the water out that it hits the ice and splashes back on to whatever is behind the bottle, in this instance it was his face. I showed him my jacket and he said, “Oh.”

H was spraying the ice, then smooshing it between his fingers and he said, “Look, its smoosh. It comes off, watch. It must be science!”
H said, “Look at this thing, it’s all complete.”
Next C and H started wiping the ice and noticed that the snow on top of the ice was coming off. C said, “We’re making more white.” H replied, “So we can color it again,”
By this time, it was just C and H working on the ice. C said, “We can spray it some more, over here, and over here and over here.” H, “Put some light green here. C, “I’ll get some dark green too.” C, “Can I have that one now?” H, “Can you be mindful of me here.”
Then we were ready to head inside as someone exclaimed that our 5 minutes were up!

The following photos were an extension of the class before. When the children arrived, they wanted me to get more ice from the sand box and get the spray bottles out. OK!

The photos on the bottom of H looking at the spray nozzle, he was trying to figure out how the water comes out of the bottle...
H said, "Hey C, you can see where the color goes through... there through the pipe. The water comes in right there!"
